Get to Know Oakwood Farm
Oakwood Farm is nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Oakwood Farm was once the home of Furches Brothers Brangus. Ken and Kim Furches partnered with Ken's brother, Dwight and his wife, Jeana and began breeding and raising Brangus cattle (5/8 Brahman and 3/8 Angus). After several successful years, Dwight Furches moved the herd to Alabama, in order to make room for planting Christmas trees. After the trees were planted, 15 acres remained which Ken and his son, Brian began utilizing to raise quarter horses.
During this time, Kim's father, Tommy Barlow gifted her with a standard gelded donkey, who she named Griffin. Griffin quickly became the most popular resident of the farm. The Furches children offered plenty of opportunities for Griffin to be the star of the show. It didn't take long before Kim was pleading with Ken to get Griffin a buddy...or two...or three. This idea led to the Annual Wild Pony Sale at Grayson Highlands Park in Mt. Rogers, Virginia. There they purchased 2 wild ponies. Kim's new hobby was taming these two ponies by earning their trust. Next, they acquired miniature donkeys. Life has never been the same.
Currently, Oakwood Farm keeps approximately 20 miniature donkeys, 15 Olde English Southdown Sheep, and 4 American Harlequin Sheep. Oakwood Farm welcomes you to come by and visit. |
